Cruising the Canal du Rhone au Rhin and Doubs river
The entrance is not easy because of strong current on the Saone.
We were issued with a remote control for the locks.
On leaving the first lock we were surrounded by barges, some with people living on board.
Others are put up for the winter at Bourgogne Marine.
No need to hide, we're friendly!
Several moorings available here, but our destination is Dole.
Initial scenery pleasant, except for a huge chemical works.
Towns and scenery are ok but not outstanding. The best is to come.
The villages have a cared for look, some of the properties have lovely gardens.
The initial section of canal now joins the river Doubs.
The first view is amazing, it goes up steeply with houses at every angle to its summit around the cathedral.
The old town is stunning, a photographers paradise.
The granite cliffs tower over you as you head up the Doubs. This has to be one of the most breathtaking stretches of scenery we have seen.
Haltes with limited facilities are scattered along the Doubs.

Navigating close to weirs during high water can be risky, this is more comfortable.
The afternoon cruise to Ranchot was really nice, mixture of canal & river.
Had a great lunch at La Marine, Friture du Carpe.
This is a pleasant tunnel, you can see the light at the other end.

The main attraction of Besancon is the incredible citadel set high up over the town.
This halte is convenient for a walk up tothe citadel.
We did the ‘boucle’, the loop, tiptoeing but still touched something in the middle with our bilge keel. We crept over it without issue and tip toed into the marina.
Halte du Moulin St Paul has full facilities and is close to city center.
New mooring pontoons are close to the covered market building.
Care is needed due to the vastly varying depths, mostly shallow.
Deluz, in the valley of the Jura Mountains; new lovely moorings, very peaceful.
A really nice village abounding with flowers but there were no shops.
Traveling along this most beautiful part of the river in wonderful sunshine is truly lving!
This is certainly y one of the most spectacular rivers we have been on.
On a little backwater we came across the hamlet of Ougney-la-Roche.
Chez Soi is mainly B & B with dinner supplied on a pre-order basis.
The caravan park next to moorings was obviously very popular.
The footbridge/cycleway from the moorings cuts the distance and traffic into the town.
The moorings at Clerval are on a pontoon above the bridge.
We walked round the town, quite nice, old and quaint but not much there.
From here we travel on the canals only all the way to Mulhouse.
l'Isle sur le Doubs initially interesting but not worth more than an overnight stay.
Welcome in the port of Montbeliard was poor.
Visit the old town was a must and a delight, not to be missed.
Good cruise, scenery varied and far reaching.
Village a 10 minute walk away with supermarket and fuel/gas station.
Lovely small town with a change in architecture, German and Swiss influence.
From Dannemarie to Mulhouse we had 24 locks and 2 lifting bridges – going down was relatively hassle free.
The marina in Mulhouse is next to the railway station but it is surprisingly quiet.
What a surprisingly lovely city this is, architecture is stunning.
